Kamal is back, and How!!!

Nobody really expected Dasavatharam to bomb at the box office. The only pre-release question was- 'will it be his best ever movie(not an easy feat for any movie, ofcourse) or just another 'good' movie?' And though the answer has to be the latter, Kamal fans need not sulk. Because Dr. Kamal Hasan gives us all a movie to remember his genius by. Here is a movie that revolves around Kamal(or rather, Kamals) like none other. Scenes with 3 or 4 Kamals are not rare, and it is to the actor's credit that he still manages to deliver. True, some of the (Kamal) characters are pretty undercooked and 'perhaps' even unnecessary; but then, 3 hours is all that the director has and his effort is commendable.

Next, which character has Kamal played best, one might ask! The easy answer lies in the main protagonist, and most definitely the villain. But, it is the Telugu speaking intelligence officer who really caught my fancy. He was rib ticklingly humourous, and character-wise brilliant too. So, my vote would probably go for him.

A crisp movie analysis would probably read like this(ofcourse, my take, that is)

Story - though seemingly 'for the 1st time in Indian cinema,' it was engaging at best. No gaping loose ends. 3.5/5

Direction - Expected. 3.5/5

Acting - Merely attempting 10 roles in a movie deserves plaudits. Kamal matches (or maybe exceeds, for cynics if any) expectations, Asin matches him scene for scene most of the time too. Rest of the cast don't have too much scope. 4.75/5

Editing - Crisp most of the time, though you can never say perfect for Indian(especially Tamil) movies. 3/5

Music - One thing is for sure. Nobody's going to remember the music with time, let alone remember the film for its music. Himesh Reshammiya plays spoiler. Considering the expectations and budget scale of the movie, 1.5/5

Dialogues - As good as it gets for this genre of Tamil movies. Kamal mixes humour and sophistication elegantly. 4/5

Screenplay - Appealing in parts, but could have been better at times. 3/5

Overall- 3 or 3.5/5

In the end, what you bargained for is what you get! Nothing more(it is surely not great cinema by any means), nothing less(Kamal at his best. Period!)

Watch it, if you are a Kamal fan. Otherwise, watch it and become one......
